What is a BarCamp?

A BarCamp is a creative and innovative event format. You could also call it an “unconference”, which is why this type of meeting is so suitable for bringing people together on sustainable development due to its small foot print. It is born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment, which allows for a valuable exchange of knowledge and experience among the participants. It is an intense event with discussions, best practice sharing and interaction from attendees. There are no key-note speakers, no pre-determined sessions, not even event apps; instead, participants are able to co-design the content every day of the event themselves.

BarCamps are typically taking plave on the weekend (or Friday through Saturday), tend to be relatively affordable, and have a casual Camp character. Social media sharing and remote conference participants are also an integrative part. The first barcamps were organized in the area of technology / IT in the USA. Through the open format, attendees share openly with other barcampers. During the event, and after leaving, "BarCampers" usually share it with the world via blogs, social media and other forms of communication. In other words: NO SPECTATORS, ONLY PARTICIPANTS.

The only set framework are the Rules of BarCamp:

  • 1st Rule: You do talk about BarCamp.
  • 2nd Rule: You do blog about BarCamp.
  • 3rd Rule: Presentations / topics are submitted openly and decided at the event.
  • 4th Rule: Only three word intros.
  • 5th Rule: As many presentations at a time as facilities allow for (usually 3 parallel sessions).
  • 6th Rule: No pre-scheduled presentations or "product demos", no "tourists".
  • 7th Rule: Presentations will go on as long as they have to or until the time is up (usually 50 minute sessions).
  • 8th Rule: If this is your first time at BarCamp, you HAVE to present. (Ok, you don't really HAVE to, but try to find someone to present with, or at least ask questions and be an interactive participant.)
